Meaning

The High Priestess is a spiritually intuitive woman full of mystery, wisdom, and understanding. She represents the inner life and the method for contacting it, as well as the contemplative study of nature and spiritual mystery. She is less about making decisions, and more about waiting to make the decision until you've listened to your inner voice. Gain knowledge before you act: instinctual, supernatural, secret, and of the self. This card indicates a journey of self-discovery.

Listen to your intuition, keep it secret. Look within to find the answers. Prioritize self-cultivation. You possess inherent good judgment, in the form of strong intuition. Reason should take second place to instinct here. Your head must trust in the wisdom of your heart for a change. She could also be indicative of someone close to you coming to your rescue with their own intuition.

Intuition is most effective at seeing what is hidden to the senses, so the High Priestess may also come as a warning of concealed facts or influences that are, or will be, important to you. Aspired new knowledge. Human wisdom. Knowledge, truth, awareness. She is a receptive mirror.

Wait. Nonaction. Remain patient. Listen to your inner knowledge.

In sequence: The Fool has encountered the Magician already. Some say he decided he wanted to develop his innate powers, making a move toward becoming a Magician, and The High Priestess is his first teacher. Others say he just ran into the Magician on his journey, and now is running into the High Priestess, a beautiful and mysterious woman. She is quiet, unlike the loquacious Magician. She is still where the Magician was in motion. She is in the night, while he was in the day. She has a half-visible scroll, representing hidden information. She gives him insight on how to use his new tools, and suggests he follow his instincts to make a decision.

Adhere to your chosen spiritual practice on a more regular basis. If you want the benefits of evolution, you'll have to cooperate with spirit. We all have reasons why we can’t find time to retreat into our inner sanctum. Until you consider this as vital to your well-being as eating and sleeping, you’re likely to be eternally restless and deeply dissatisfied. A spiritual routine that suits your temperament, practiced daily, is the most trustworthy path to freedom.

Other: Purity, chaste. Potential.

Reversed Meaning

Intuition is blocked or influenced. You may find it difficult to listen to your intuition, you may be ignoring your gut. Confusion. Lost inner voice. Lack of center. Repressed feelings.

Wait for the facts. There may be details you are missing. Do not tell.

When you have problems, it's usually because your inner life has become an addiction in itself. It blots out your interest in ordinary reality, friends, and family -- the connections that hold us fast to our worldly identities. Don't take this card as permission to abandon the world. This is a reminder to balance your outer identifications with internal cultivation, so you can more effectively bring the spiritual world to the material world.

Other: Promiscuous, mistress.
