XV. THE DEVIL

Whose influence are you under?

Capricorn. (Earth) — Worldliness, success.

Temptation, bondage, materialism, addiction, dependency, hopelessness, sexuality.

Meaning

Hedonism, temptation, greed, dependency. Review your bondage to material assets. Addiction to substances or material pleasures can also be the reason for your feelings of powerlessness and entrapment. No matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to shake off the feeling of wanting to indulge in opulent, luxurious living. Addiction to power and finer things in life leaves you unhappy. Your individual power has been taken from you, leaving you exposed and ashamed. Hopelessness. The more time you spend with the Devil, the less human you become.

You may feel as though you are unable to control your impulses to direct yourself towards something other than the satisfaction of these desires. You know this kind of lifestyle is leading you down the rabbit hole, but you have that feeling of not having any form of control over your actions or urges. You have feelings of entrapment, emptiness and lack of fulfillment in your life. You have more choices than you think you do, you only need to reclaim your power. This can be scary, to take accountability for a situation that you dislike, but it can also be empowering.

The culturally rejected wildness and undigested shadow side that each of us carries in our subconscious. This shadow is actually at the core of our being, which we cannot get rid of and will never succeed in taming. Overcome the pressure of stereotyped roles and experience true freedom of soul. Let go of inhibitions. Allow yourself to express all of who you are.

This card can also mean really dark shit like assault, abuse, and violence. Addiction, obsession, depression, mental health issues, sexual attraction, cheating, secrecy, falsehood, manipulation, oppression, ignorance, insecurity, powerlessness, excess, limitations.

Addiction in relationships can manifest as codependency. Or if you’re just trying to have fun, say that. Avoid pressuring others to participate in your vices. Spend money less compulsively. Do everything less compulsively.

The Devil is fear itself: illusion, the material world. Your demons, your projections onto and from others. Your shadow, dark side, and unconscious. Phallic, sexual, and wild energy. Authority figures.

Positive spin: The Devil is a source of raw power. Tap into it. The esoteric function assigned to the Devil is laughter. Be devil-may-care.

Reversed Meaning

This could be the moment you become self-aware and break the chains that come with addiction and poor habits. It might be because you are tired of running in circles and need change. It’s not going to be easy. You have to be prepared to make changes that might initially seem painful, but will ultimately pay off and you’ll re-find your true self.

You’re breaking free from negative patterns or addictions. You may feel in control of your life now more than ever. Nurture your independence. Resist. Freedom, reclaiming power, restoring control, release, revelation.

You may no longer feel dependent on your job or relationship or anything else for a sense of stability, understanding that you can find it within yourself.
